Why do you have baking soda? Oh. Not that you’re not allowed to. We have lots of baking soda
Baking soda. in the kitchen,
Well, Rachel, but why do you have baking soda? Rachel, I hate to tell you this, but the leading cause of holiday fires is cooking. Not in my kitchen. (audience laughing) Well, you know, so yes, the baking soda. Okay, here’s the age old, we’ve all heard baking soda for you know, a kitchen fire, a grease fire. Yes, baking soda is the basic ingredient in a lot of dry powder type extinguishers, but I’m not a big fan of really throwing things at or in a fire, okay? Okay. So something better we can do is have a home fire extinguisher. Okay? (audience clapping) Uh, yeah, which is a basic. We should all have one of those. We should have one, okay. It should be called an A, B, C rating. Well what does that mean? It means that it’s okay for your home. It means it’s designed to put out several different types of fires that might happen I gotcha.
In the home. You literally want to see all three letters? You do.
A, B, C? A, B, and C.
Great. But, even a fire extinguisher, you need some training. Okay, you can’t just pick it up and use it for the first time when you need it. So, go online, watch a tutorial, go to your local fire station, ask them how to use it. They would be more than happy to show you how to use it, okay?
That’s true. (audience clapping) And what about, what about our chimneys? Fireplaces. Yes.
You have a beautiful fireplace right here, okay. Some things to know about the fireplace. Maybe you don’t use it all year. Maybe some people just use it during the holidays. I’m from from Upstate New York, You use it.
We use it tweleve months a year. So then, you know you know the safety rules. Right. But, someone who doesn’t, you know, you really, you may not be sure. We want to make sure that the chimney is cleaned by a licensed professional. Absolutely.
Okay, it’s been swept. It’s clean. It’s ready to go, okay. But, during the holiday times, only burn wood or fire logs in that fireplace. Don’t be tempted. People throw in all of the wrapping paper, the bows. During the holidays to throw in a box or let the kids throw in some wrapping. You have the wrapping paper all over the living room, right. Okay, I know in my family we used to make a game out of where it went. Okay, shooting baskets or something like that. Right, right, right. Do that, but make sure it doesn’t end up in the fireplace and I’ll tell ya why because the fireplace is not designed for that. Throwing in a box, throwing in wrapping paper could cause a flash fire and it could injure people. It does, it’s starts floating around. Oh yeah.
It whirls around and it’s a very–
It could set the chimney itself on fire.
Absolutely, absolutely. They’re very flammable.
